Scream codes and convections
Take screen shots from the sequence you're describing and try to explain how the clip managed to achieve the response you had.The first point from the film where I felt the most tense was when scream on the phone was telling the girl to turn on the patio light, cause you know you dread the thing that is going to be sitting there (which would be the boyfriend tied up bloodied and almost to the point of death) but just the suspense that you feel when she is unsure to turn on the light or not really gives the audience an emotional response to the moment.
The second point from the film that made me feel sympathy was when there was a long take with no cuts zooming in on the girl as she is crying telling the person to stop and pleading for her life, as you really have that connection with the character that makes you sympathise for her, the zooming on the character also contributes to the emotional connection to the character, its almost as though you are also pleading for her life.
The third point from the film where I felt hopeful for the character was when the girl had been stabbed and was crawling to her parents that had just pulled up into the driveway and she was just a few paces over to them. And it got me thinking "cmon you are almost there". But then all hope is lost when she then gets dragged back and gets hung on the tree when you find out later.
